Kids and GUNS

Guns are in nearly half of all households in the United States. So even if you don't have one, it's likely that at some point your child will be in a home where there is one. That's why it's important to talk with your child about the potential dangers of guns, and what to do if he or she finds one.

Teach your child to follow these rules from the National Rifle Associations (NRA) if he or she comes into contact with a Gun:

- Stop
- Don't touch
- Remove yourself from the area
- Tell an adult

It's particularly important that your child leave the area where the gun is located to avoid being harmed by another person who doesn't know not to touch it. A child as young as 3 has the finger strength to pull a trigger.

It's also important for your child to tell an adult about the gun that's been found.

Many kids are raised with guns in the home, particularly if hunting is an important part of family recreation. If you keep a gun in the home, it's important to teach your child to act in a safe and responsible way around it. To ensure the safest environment for your family:

- Take the ammunition out of the gun.
- Lock the gun and keep it out of reach of children.
- Lock the ammunition and store it apart from the gun.
- Store the keys for the gun and the ammunition in a different area from where you store household keys. Keep the keys out of reach of children.
- Lock up gun cleaning supplies, which are often poisonous.

Bus Safety Tips

1. Go to the bus stop about five minutes before the bus is scheduled to arrive. While at the bus stop, wait quietly in a safe place well away from the road. Do not run and play while waiting.

2. When entering the bus, go directly to a seat. Remain seated and face forward during the entire ride.

3. Never throw things on the bus or out the windows. Keep the aisles clear at all times. Feet should be directly in front of you on the floor and book bags should be kept on your lap.

4. Never play with the emergency exits.

5. Hands should be kept to yourself at all times while riding on the bus. Fighting and picking on others creates a dangerous bus ride.

6. If you leave something on the bus, never return to the bus to get it. The driver may not see you come back and he/she may begin moving the bus.

7. Respect the "Danger Zone" Which surrounds all sides of the bus. The "Danger Zone" is ten feet wide on all sides of the bus. Always remain ten steps away from the bus to be out of the "Danger Zone."

8. Never Speak to strangers at the bus stop and never get into the car with a stranger. Always go straight home and tell your parents if a stranger tries to talk to you or pick you up.
